Experience Westbourne and its daily life

Westbourne is a small village, 35 km north west of Portage la Prairie, north of the junction of Highway #16 (Yellowhead Route), off the Trans-Canada Highway.

It is a busy little community, with special suppers, banquets, catering, and a ball tournament in July, the annual Fall Supper in October, and dances.

Within 15 km of Westbourne are three busy campgrounds, each offering a boat launch, where you can enter the Whitemud River or Lake Manitoba, to try your hand at some fishing, or for a quiet ride on the Whitemud River or lake. They have many special activities on the long weekends during the summer; such as pancake breakfasts, a fish derby, dances, fireworks, fun games, etc., with swimming being a major interest. Two years ago, it was recorded that the largest Northern Pike caught in Canada was out of the Whitemud River. No guarantee there are still some left, but who knows?

Our spacious Community Centre houses a two-sheet artificial ice curling rink, a community hall with one of the most convenient kitchens, and a large waiting room. It is ideal for family and business functions. The rink is a perfect location for large summer receptions and socials.

The businesses at this time include the Foods & Fuel Convenience store, two second-hand businesses, Munro’s Farm Supplies and a full-service Post Office. St. George’s Anglican Church holds services at 10 am , but is closed during the summer months. The eight-suite, seniors’ First Crossing Courts have nice spacious rooms, for our retired citizens to enjoy a place near home. A number of community folk gather every Monday there, for a friendly game of cards.

We live in an area with a great many historical spots, which have not yet been marked; a project worth looking into. It was deemed First Crossing of the Whitemud River for the travelers heading north west on the Carlton trail to Edmonton . There are locations of three ghost towns, a Hudson ’s Bay post, cheese factory and lumber mill. Remnants of some of these places are still visible.
