In 1905 Holland and Dawson school districts joined to become a single school district known as No. 117. This was the first consolidated school district in Manitoba.

The community was named after Mr. A. C. Holland, the first postmaster for the settlement.

Our Lady of the Prairies, near Holland, is the first and only Trappist monastery west of Ontario.
