PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE

Portage has the distinction of having the only location in North America where 2 major rail lines share the same crossing, at 14th St. West.

PortagEx, is the oldest continuously running fair in western Canada.

Fort la Reine Museum is home of Sir William Van Horne’s railway business car. This is the car that acted as a mobile office and sleeping facility for Van Horne when he supervised the construction of the CPR railway – the railway that joined Canada from sea to sea, and fulfilled the terms of Confederation. Decisions in concert with the then Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald about the location of the railway, and therefore the pattern of settlement and growth of Canadian towns and cities were made in this car.

Portage is home to the world’s largest Coke Can.

North of town, Canada’s largest Great Grey Owl has found a home. The owl is 13 feet tall, and weighs 2,100 pounds.

The Manitoba Softball Home of Fame is located at Fort la Reine Museum.

Fort la Reine Museum is the home of the world’s only Allis Chalmers Museum, which is recognized world-wide by collectors and hobbyists. The museum has been visited by a consortium of British, Scottish and American farmers, wanting to see the collection at the museum, and its curator, Gilbert Vust. The annual North American get together, a 3-day event called “The Gathering of the Orange” was held here in the fall of 2004.
