SOUTHPORT

Every Canadian military pilot passes through Southport at least once as they learn to fly.

 

This is the only remaining site of three flying training centre established in the Portage area. Two were established at Southport, the other at MacDonald.

 

Southport once sported a mascot with a wingspan of 7 feet – Southport Slim.

 

Southport has the 1st and only privately owned and operated, Transport Canada approved air traffic control tower in Canada.

 

First operations commenced on December 4, 1940.

 

Southport was 10 feet below the water line of the Assiniboine River in 1940 prior to the construction of the aerodrome.
